Bromine was discovered by Antoine Balard, a French chemist, in 1826 but compounds of Bromine were used as early as 1570 BC to make an expensive color known as "Tyrian Purple". Bromine today is used as a water disinfectant in swimming pools and is also added to gasoline. Bromine is also commonly used as a pesticide in agriculture.
